SUSTAINABILITY
RECYCLE. REUSE. REDUCE.
At Fairrington, responsible stewardship of the environment is a corporate imperative. During the past several years, our sustainability task force has identified specific steps our company can take to reduce waste, recycle and reduce transportation-related emissions. Here’s a snapshot of our sustainability efforts over the past two years.
U.S. EPA WasteWise Partner
Fairrington became a U.S. EPA WasteWise program partner in July of 2009. In 2008, we diverted 181 tons of materials from the landfill through recycling, reusing things, or donating items to people who could use them. We will continue to expand and improve our waste diversion opportunities.

Fairrington reduces usage/waste:
- Upgraded warehouse lights to high bay fluorescents in the Bolingbrook facility in September 2008, significantly reducing our electric usage.
- Upgraded warehouse lights to high bay fluorescents in the Cranbury, NJ facility in early 2009, significantly reducing our electric usage.
- Replaced hand towels in most restrooms with electric dryers, saving many trees.
- Installed automatic flush devices on urinals.
- Installed occupancy sensors in restrooms and some meeting rooms to reduce electricity usage.
- Removed the light bulbs and ballasts from some of the vending machines to reduce electricity usage.
- Purchase bulk packed products when possible to reduce packaging waste.
- Utilizes copiers with scanning capabilities (to distribute documents via email instead of hard copies) and copiers and printers that will print double sided, reducing our paper and toner usage.
- Replace appliances with Energy Star appliances.
Fairrington Recycles:
Cardboard – in 2008 we recycled 4.5 tons of cardboard, which achieved the following:
- 76.5 trees from having to be cut down and used for pulp
- 31,500 gallons of water
- Cuts pollution 95%
- Saves 49.5 barrels (2079 gallons) of oil
- Saves more than 13.5 cubic yards of landfill space
Office paper – in 2008 we recycled 56 tons of mixed office paper, which saved the following:
- 952 trees
- 229,600 kilowatts of energy
- 392,000 gallons of water
- 168 cubic yards of landfill space
- 21,280 gallons of oil
- 3360 pounds of air pollution
Other Recycled Products:
- Toner cartridges
- Wooden pallets
- Packing peanuts
- Steel – in 2008 we recycled .5 tons of steel, which conserved 1250 lbs. of iron ore, 700 lbs. of coal and 60 lbs. of limestone.
- Batteries
- Light bulbs
- Aluminum cans
- Tires
- Plastic wrap – in November 2009 we purchased a baler which allows us to bale plastic wrap and cardboard, eliminating about 13 tons of plastic and 5 tons of cardboard annually from the landfill.
Hazardous waste:
- We properly dispose of light bulbs, batteries, paint and other hazardous materials.
Building efforts:
- Irrigation system has sensors to prevent activation when it has rained.
- The irrigation system is set up to water the flowerbeds ever other day instead of daily. (This modification decreased the irrigation water usage by 45% during the summer months.)
- Landscape company has replaced annual flowers with perennial flowers.
- The contractor used in 2008 for the parking lot repairs at the Corporate Crossing V facility has a number of green initiatives including:
- All asphalt removed for sites is recycled
- All asphalt mix purchased is recycled mix
- All diesel fuel used for equipment is ultra low sulfur fuel
- All waste engine oil is reused to heat the contractor’s maintenance garage
- Managers drive hybrid company vehicles to job sites
Fairrington Transportation
We utilize the following strategies to help reduce fuel consumption and emissions associated with shipping activities:
- Work with primarily SmartWay carriers, most of which have an exceptional fuel efficiency/environmental performance score.
- Utilize intermodal shipping when possible. In 2009, we reduced CO2 Emissions an estimated 4,680 tons by utilizing rail vs road.
- In 2009 we converted to a new enterprise system that allows Improved Freight Logistics.
- Eliminate trips by altering load planning times, loading times, dispatch times and routing.
- Ship full truckloads whenever possible.
- Provide a lounge for drivers equipped with seating area, HVAC, vending machines and restrooms.
- Encourage no idling in our parking lot.
- Schedule pickups and deliveries with extended shipping and receiving hours at our facility to minimize wait/idle time and allow carriers to avoid traffic congestion.
- Encourage dropped trailers at our facilities for our high volume carriers and spotted equipment at our customers’ facilities to reduce wait/idle time.
- Utilize electric forklifts.
FTC Transport
We are involved in the following green initiatives and strategies to help reduce fuel consumption and emissions from our fleet:
- In 2009 we converted to a new enterprise system that allows Improved Freight Logistics.
- Eliminate trips by altering load planning times, loading times, dispatch times and routing.
- Pre-match trips to minimize empty miles and eliminate empty trips.
- In 2009 we switched to purchasing only Verified Low Rolling Resistance Tires for our road fleet that are EPA approved to meet the SmartWay Trailer equipment specification.
- When the tires on the road fleet wear out, we extend their life by having them re-capped to be used on our local fleet.
- We recycle the tires from our local fleet when they wear out by having our tire vendor turn them over to a certified tire recycler.
- Instituted a tire maintenance program to reduce fuel consumption by monitoring proper tire inflation.
- FTC Transport has invested in extra equipment to maximize drop and switches. We utilize spotted trailers at our terminals and high volume customers. Pre-loading trailers allows FTC Transport to reduce wait/idle time and avoid traffic congestion.
- Encourage no-idling among owner operators.
- Educate our owner-operators in safety and fuel saving strategies.
We continue to explore additional opportunities to reduce emissions.
